Hadleigh Castle built as a base for protecting the Thames Estuary from attack by the French in the 100year war Edward 111 was the first king to see its importance in the 14 century. On the hillside close to Southend on Sea overlooking the Thames estuary and the North Sea right across to the Kent coast line on the South of the Thames.
