Description
The armed Towers in the Thames, known as the Maunsell Forts, were built during the Second World War to help defend the United Kingdom as army and naval forts. When they decommissioned in the late 1950’s they were subsequently used as a pirate radio station – Radio Sutch and Radio Invicta being forerunners.
They have also been used for film and TV productions.
The unrecognised Principality of Sealand manages one of the forts and the Redlands Fort is part of a project to conserve it. These bizarre looking structures are still an attraction for Thames shipping.
